Alleviating rural poverty in a sustainable manner through partnerships, networking, and collaborations with like-minded institutions, to reduce the pressure on available resources of marginalized and weaker sections of society.
BIRD was established in 2015 in response to the severe droughts that struck Maharashtra during 2012–2014, especially in Western Maharashtra and the Marathwada region. This drought seriously affected the resource availability of underprivileged communities. Since then, BIRD has intervened across Maharashtra as a non-governmental organization providing technical support for development and rehabilitation work.
In 2015, BIRD was registered under the Maharashtra Societies Registration 223/2015 Pune. Initially founded by seven professionals from various development sectors, BIRD was created to strengthen resource availability for underprivileged communities through holistic and sustainable approaches.
The organization began with watershed development projects in drought-prone villages to augment groundwater and improve rural livelihoods. Later, it expanded its focus toward education, capacity building, and water conservation practices, adopting an integrated watershed development approach to rural development.
Over the last decade, BIRD has evolved with time — constantly adapting to the changing developmental landscape of rural India while continuing its mission to empower and uplift communities sustainably.
